University Guide

Beyond admission: what this school is like, how it teaches architecture, and what studying here actually involves.

History

Universita degli Studi della Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli" was previously named Seconda Universita degli Studi di Napoli (SUN), established 1990 when Naples' Federico II was split. It was renamed in 2015-2016 after the Neapolitan-Dutch Baroque architect Luigi Vanvitelli, designer of the nearby Reggia di Caserta.

Academic reputation

A specific current Censis architecture-subject score for Vanvitelli could not be independently confirmed; treat any cited ranking figure cautiously.

Position in Italian architecture education

A mid-sized regional public architecture school in the Naples metropolitan area -- one of several Southern-Italy public options, not among Italy's recognised top-tier schools (Politecnico di Milano/Torino, Sapienza, IUAV Venezia).

International reputation

Runs Erasmus+ mobility including newer Blended Intensive Programmes with partner institutions in Germany, Greece, France, Spain and elsewhere.

The architecture school

DADI -- Dipartimento di Architettura e Disegno Industriale — Taught at the Abbazia di San Lorenzo ad Septimum, Aversa -- a repurposed 16th-century Benedictine abbey and cloister

DADI formed in 2012 from the earlier Faculty of Architecture "Luigi Vanvitelli" (founded in the early 1990s), under the national shift from faculties to departments (Legge Gelmini reform).

The department describes itself as "a laboratory of ideas, a workshop of projects, a construction site of experiences", emphasising direct faculty-student contact through labs, workshops, and a weekly public event series ("Storie di Architettura e Design") held at the abbey.

Parallel Architecture and Design tracks, dedicated laboratories, an in-house digital publishing imprint (DADI_PRESS, since 2017), and interdisciplinary doctoral research.

Educational characteristics

Design education

Four sequential "Laboratorio di Progettazione Architettonica" studios across Years 1-4, each paired with a complementary technical lab (technology, representation, urban planning, structural), plus a fifth-year intensive design workshop -- a classic Italian integrated-studio model.

Technical education

A clear structural sequence: Statica (Year 2) then Scienza delle Costruzioni (Year 3) then a 12-CFU Laboratorio di Progettazione Strutturale (Year 4), consistent with the LM-4's architecture/building-engineering hybrid character.

Historical & cultural education

Substantial: Storia dell'Architettura Contemporanea (Year 1), Storia dell'Architettura Medioevale e Moderna (Year 2), Storia della Citta and heritage law (Year 3), and a dedicated 12-CFU Laboratorio di Restauro Architettonico in Year 4 -- one of the single largest courses in the curriculum.

Digital education

"Abilita informatiche per il progetto" (Year 1) and a Year-4 "Abilita Informatiche - Rilievo Digitale Integrato" (integrated digital survey) confirm CAD and digital-survey skill-building, though official pages do not name BIM software explicitly.

Laboratory activities

Structured competition-based workshops at the end of Year 2 and Year 4 (real architecture-competition participation), a compulsory Year-3 internship (8 CFU), and the weekly "Storie di Architettura e Design" department event series.

What makes it different

The teaching seat itself -- a repurposed 16th-century Benedictine abbey and cloister in Aversa -- gives the school a historic-building daily context uncommon among Italian architecture schools. The curriculum carries an unusually substantial 12-CFU restoration studio plus a heritage-law course. Aversa sits roughly midway between Caserta and Naples, within easy reach of both; no confirmed official curricular partnership with the nearby Reggia di Caserta (a separate state museum) was found, so this should be framed as geographic proximity, not an academic tie.

Is this university right for you?

A good fit if you: are drawn to restoration and heritage work, want to study inside a historic building (a converted 16th-century abbey), and want a lower-cost alternative to nearby Naples.

Less suitable if you: specifically want to study in Caserta itself rather than Aversa, or want a design-first (rather than restoration-heavy) curriculum.

International environment

International students

The 5-year Italian-taught Architettura programme is distinct from two separate, shorter English-taught LM-4 Master's tracks DADI also offers: "Architettura - Progettazione degli Interni e per l'Autonomia" (with a double-degree agreement with Okan University, Istanbul) and "Architecture - Regeneration of Built Environment".

Exchange programmes

Erasmus+ mobility is active, including Blended Intensive Programmes with partner institutions such as Anhalt, Thessaly, ENSA, ETU and UPV.

English-taught courses

The standard 5-year Architettura c.u. is taught in Italian; separate English-taught LM-4 tracks exist at DADI for those wanting an English-language pathway, but are different programmes from the one in this database.

International partnerships

A double-degree agreement with Okan University, Istanbul (dated 2015/16) exists for a separate, shorter English-taught interior-design LM-4 track.

Career

Career outcomes

Per the official Regolamento Didattico, graduates commonly work in independent practice, design/engineering firms, construction companies, public and private bodies, Soprintendenze (heritage superintendencies), and banking institutions. AlmaLaurea data: 68.0% employed 1 year after graduation, rising to 93.8% at 3 years and 85.1% at 5 years; average time to first job 6.7 months; average monthly salary EUR1,324 at 1 year rising to EUR1,742 at 5 years.

Internships

A compulsory Tirocinio of 8 CFU is required in Year 3 (capped at 12 months); a separate voluntary post-graduation stage of up to 12 months is also available.

Professional qualification pathway

LM-4 c.u. is the direct route to full Architetto registration in the Albo Professionale degli Architetti, Pianificatori, Paesaggisti e Conservatori after the Esame di Stato, recognised across the EU under Directive 2005/36/CE.

Student life

Living cost level: Low

General cost-of-living estimates for Caserta province put total monthly cost around EUR1,187 for a single person, with a small residential apartment around EUR770/month -- roughly 28% cheaper than the average of all Italian provinces. Student room rents in Aversa run from around EUR350/month plus utilities privately, or EUR410-595/month for subsidised student housing.

Aversa and Caserta are smaller provincial towns in the Naples metropolitan hinterland, offering a quieter, lower-cost alternative to studying in central Naples while still being within reach of it.

A quieter, lower-cost regional environment compared to central Naples, with Naples itself reachable for a larger-city social and cultural life.
