History
Sapienza was founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII as the Studium Urbis, making it one of the oldest universities in the world and the oldest in Rome. It moved over the centuries from Trastevere to the historic Sant'Eustachio palazzo (the origin of the name "Sapienza") and eventually to the modern Città Universitaria campus. Today it is the largest university in Europe by enrolment, with roughly 112,000 students.

Position in Italian architecture education
Sapienza's Facoltà di Architettura was Italy's first Faculty of Architecture: it began in 1919/20 as the Regia Scuola Superiore di Architettura — founded the same era as the Bauhaus in Weimar — and became a full Faculty in 1935. It was the first Italian school to combine building, restoration and urban-planning teaching, adding design studios in 1994 and landscape architecture in 2000.

Founding figure Gustavo Giovannoni (professor from 1914, school director 1927-1933) shaped the school around his concept of the "architetto integrale" (integral architect) combining design, construction and history. Marcello Piacentini and Adalberto Libera taught there in its early decades; Bruno Zevi and Ludovico Quaroni joined following the late-1960s reform movement that pushed the school toward modernist renewal.
The Master's-level (LM-4) programmes are designed under EU Directive 2005/36/CE to train a "European architect" combining aesthetic, functional, structural and technical-economic competence — continuing Giovannoni's founding idea of an integrated, not narrowly specialised, architectural education.

Architettura runs a continuous Laboratorio di Progettazione Architettonica sequence (I-IV) culminating in a Year-5 specialisation Laboratorio di Sintesi (choice of Progettazione Architettonica, Urbanistica, Urbana e Paesaggio, Strutturale, Tecnologica, or Restauro). Ingegneria edile-architettura instead pairs every design studio with a technical subject (e.g. "Architettura Tecnica con Laboratorio Progettuale"). Technical education
