History
Politecnico di Bari was established by Law No. 245 of 7 August 1990, the youngest of Italy's three Polytechnics (after Milano and Torino) and the only one in Southern/Central-Southern Italy. Its roots reach back further: the pre-existing Engineering Faculty of the University of Bari taught courses from winter 1943-44, and its own Architecture Faculty was established in 1989, joining the Polytechnic from its founding alongside the Taranto Engineering Faculty (1991). It has roughly 11,000 students across Bari and Taranto, offering Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design.
Academic reputation
In the Censis 2025/2026 Italian university ranking, Politecnico di Bari placed 3rd among Italy's 'Politecnici' category (85.7 points), behind Politecnico di Milano (100.8) and Politecnico di Torino (94.8), and just ahead of IUAV Venezia (83.7). QS World University Rankings places it in the #951-1000 global band.
Position in Italian architecture education
A smaller, regional public technical university serving Puglia and southern Italy -- a solid, respected national player in engineering/architecture/design, but without the scale or international brand recognition of Politecnico di Milano or Sapienza.
International reputation
Holds an active Erasmus code (IBARI05) and describes a large number of international cooperation agreements; incoming Erasmus students are documented from Spain, France, Germany and Hungary among others, at a modest scale relative to Italy's larger universities.
The architecture school
ArCoD -- Dipartimento di Architettura, Costruzione e Design (until September 2022 named DICAR) — Based at the "E. Quagliariello" University Campus, Via Orabona 4, Bari
The Architecture Faculty was founded in 1989, one year before the Polytechnic itself, and became part of the DICAR/ArCoD department following the 2010 university reform (Law 240/2010) that replaced separate Faculties with Departments. The department's eight research areas span architectural/urban/landscape design, archaeology/drawing/restoration of architecture, technological and industrial design, structural and hydraulic engineering, urban planning and real estate, and technical physics.
The "Architecture Sciences for Heritage" programme is explicitly built around a broadened concept of heritage, covering not only monumental/archaeological heritage but also everyday architecture (housing, industrial, productive) with renovation/reuse potential. It invokes the Council of Europe's 2005 Faro Convention (heritage as a resource for community development) and frames the graduate's role around the keywords "Custodire" and "Coltivare" (to safeguard and to cultivate/tend), combining conservation-minded and transformation-minded competencies.
Politecnico di Bari also runs a standard 5-year single-cycle Laurea Magistrale in Architettura (Italian-taught, roughly 170 seats for 2026/27) as its mainstream path; Architecture Sciences for Heritage is a distinct, separate, English-taught 3-year joint programme alongside it, not a replacement for it.

Educational characteristics
Design education
Courses are organised as integrated blocks combining a design studio with paired theory/technical modules each semester (e.g. Design Studio for Architectural Heritage = Design + Restoration + BIM taught as one block), using intensive workshop/atelier sessions with invited external Italian and foreign expert faculty.
Technical education
A standard structural/statics sequence runs Statics to Structural Mechanics to Structural Design across the three years, plus building physics, environmental technical physics, and building systems for ecological transition.
Historical & cultural education
This is the programme's centre of gravity: ancient, medieval/Renaissance/Baroque and contemporary architectural history; dedicated restoration theory and practice (SSD ICAR/19) across two years; an archaeology module (taught under an archaeology discipline code, L-ANT/07); heritage economics/valuation; heritage aesthetics; and a full Year-3 elective track dedicated specifically to archaeological/architectural heritage.
Digital education
HBIM (Heritage Building Information Modeling) and GIS play a transversal role across the programme rather than being confined to a single module, alongside ArchGIS/remote-sensing tools and general digital survey/representation techniques.
Laboratory activities
Integrated design-studio blocks combining design, restoration theory and digital tools, plus atelier-style workshop sessions with visiting expert faculty.
What makes it different
The headline feature is a genuine Joint Degree Programme between Politecnico di Bari and the University "Ismail Qemali" of Vlore, Albania -- a single unified cohort (not separate Bari/Vlora tracks, not a double degree) that physically relocates as a group: Semesters 1, 2, 4 and 5 in Vlore, Semesters 3 and 6 (including the thesis) in Bari, under one shared curriculum and one joint degree title valid in Italy, Albania and the EU. The programme is deliberately heritage- and conservation-focused, distinct from Politecnico di Bari's own mainstream 5-year Italian-taught Architettura programme. It is also brand new: first cohort admitted in 2025/26, so there is no graduate track record yet and the Vlore side of the partnership is still building up its own dedicated architecture faculty (teaching there currently draws substantially on Bari and partner faculty, per the university's own regulation document).
Is this university right for you?
A good fit if you: are specifically drawn to heritage and conservation work, want a genuinely international cohort (35 non-EU seats vs 15 EU/Italian), and are comfortable with a brand-new programme still building its track record.
Less suitable if you: want a large, well-established, internationally recognised architecture brand, or need every semester in one physical location rather than moving between Bari and Vlore.
International environment
International students
Of the programme's 50 annual seats, 35 are reserved for Albanian/extra-EU students and 15 for Italian/EU (mostly Apulian) students -- making this specific programme far more internationally mixed by cohort composition than the university average.
Exchange programmes
Politecnico di Bari holds an active Erasmus code (IBARI05) with incoming exchange students documented from Spain, France, Germany and Hungary among others, though no Heritage-programme-specific Erasmus partner list was found.
Erasmus
University-wide, roughly 2,000 new students enrol annually with around 70 incoming European exchange students -- a modest international presence at whole-university level (third-party estimate).
English-taught courses
Architecture Sciences for Heritage is 100% English-taught; Politecnico di Bari's mainstream 5-year Architettura programme is Italian-taught. No other English-taught architecture programme at Politecnico di Bari was found -- this appears to be the university's sole English-medium architecture pathway.
International partnerships
Partner institution is the public University "Ismail Qemali" of Vlore (founded 1994), which currently has no pre-existing architecture degree of its own -- this joint programme is effectively its first venture into architecture education. A EUR120,000 regional grant funds 15 dedicated scholarships for Apulian students on this specific programme (D.R. n. 1310, 27 Nov 2025).
Career
Career outcomes
Graduates can register in the Junior section of the Ordine degli Architetti, Pianificatori, Paesaggisti e Conservatori after the state examination, qualifying for roles as technical collaborators in architecture/engineering firms, technical staff in public administration, or construction-company technicians: documentation and digitisation of building interventions, survey work, construction-site direction, cost estimation and technical sign-off on simple civil works. Heritage-specific outcomes named in the official regulation include collaboration on urban/landscape heritage management, conservation/restoration of historic and archaeological heritage, reuse of disused industrial/military/railway heritage, and consulting for heritage-sensitive construction projects. Politecnico di Bari and the University of Vlore are planning a joint follow-on Master's programme, though this is a stated future intention, not yet operational.
Internships
A 3-CFU Tirocinio (internship) is a required part of the final semester, alongside the final thesis.
Professional qualification pathway
As with any Italian L-17, graduates register in the Junior section of the professional Order after the state exam -- a limited professional tier, not full Architetto registration, which requires continuing to a 5-year Master's-level qualification (e.g. the standard LM-51 Architettura) plus its own state exam.
Student life
Living cost level: Low
Student rents in Bari have risen sharply: a single room now averages around EUR380/month city-wide, with student-district rooms (San Pasquale, Policlinico) around EUR250-350/month and cheaper options in outlying areas; shared double rooms run from about EUR200/month per bed. Reported rent increases of 30-44% since roughly 2021 reflect a genuinely tight rental market. Vlore, Albania is markedly cheaper: student housing from roughly EUR500/month for an apartment, with a broader cost-of-living estimate suggesting a single person can live comfortably on EUR600-1,200/month depending on lifestyle.
A regional off-site student rent-reimbursement fund exists in Bari (a modest EUR1M pool for 2025, doubling in 2026-27).
Bari is a mid-sized Adriatic port city and Puglia's regional capital; Vlore is a coastal Adriatic/Ionian city in southern Albania, fitting the programme's own stated "Adriatic-Ionian macroregion" framing as a shared cultural/geographic context with Puglia. Because 4 of the programme's 6 semesters are spent in the cheaper Vlore location, overall cost of living across the full 3 years is materially lower than a Bari-only or Milan-based programme.

Frequently asked questions
Do I study in Italy or in Albania on this programme?
Both, as a single moving cohort. You spend Semesters 1, 2, 4 and 5 at the University of Vlore in Albania, and Semesters 3 and 6 (including your final thesis) at Politecnico di Bari in Italy. It is a genuine joint programme with one shared curriculum, not separate Bari and Vlore tracks.
Is Architecture Sciences for Heritage a double degree?
No. It is a single Joint Degree Programme between Politecnico di Bari and the University of Vlore -- you receive one bachelor's title in Architecture (class L-17), simultaneously valid in Italy, Albania and the EU, not two separate diplomas.
How many seats are available, and how are they split between Italian/EU and non-EU applicants?
50 seats per year total: 35 reserved for Albanian/extra-EU applicants and 15 for Italian/EU applicants (largely Apulian residents). EU/Italian candidates are competing for a relatively small pool of 15 places.
Who actually teaches the courses in Vlore -- Italian or Albanian faculty?
Because the University of Vlore does not yet have its own architecture degree programme, it has no dedicated architecture faculty of its own. Teaching, including during the Vlore-based semesters, draws substantially on Politecnico di Bari faculty and other European/Albanian academic partners, with local Vlore faculty expected to be built up progressively.
Is this programme focused on restoration, or is it a general architecture degree?
It is deliberately heritage- and conservation-focused: nearly every design studio and several theory courses are explicitly framed around heritage (restoration, archaeological heritage, urban/landscape heritage, heritage digitisation with HBIM/GIS), distinguishing it clearly from Politecnico di Bari's separate, standard 5-year Italian-taught Architettura programme.
