History

Universita degli Studi della Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli" was previously named Seconda Universita degli Studi di Napoli (SUN), established 1990 when Naples' Federico II was split. It was renamed in 2015-2016 after the Neapolitan-Dutch Baroque architect Luigi Vanvitelli, designer of the nearby Reggia di Caserta.

DADI formed in 2012 from the earlier Faculty of Architecture "Luigi Vanvitelli" (founded in the early 1990s), under the national shift from faculties to departments (Legge Gelmini reform).

The department describes itself as "a laboratory of ideas, a workshop of projects, a construction site of experiences", emphasising direct faculty-student contact through labs, workshops, and a weekly public event series ("Storie di Architettura e Design") held at the abbey.

Parallel Architecture and Design tracks, dedicated laboratories, an in-house digital publishing imprint (DADI_PRESS, since 2017), and interdisciplinary doctoral research.
